Corrugated tanks are made of AQUAPLATE® steel with a pre-painted COLORBOND® exterior finish. Tanks can also be made from stainless steel and copper, a tank in these materials are generally for special applications.

ZINCALUME® tanks took over from galvanized tanks when roofing materials changed mainly to ZINCALUME® and COLORBOND®, due to the reaction between the materials. ZINCALUME® tanks are still available but they are found to have a limited life especially if town water is used in them, on regular bases. Expect a life of 6 to 13 years however there is no guarantee of this. However they still have their uses, and are a low cost option to water storage.

AQUAPLATE® polymer-coated steel is Australia’s premier tank-making material. It combines durability, strength, light weight, performance and the polymer coating is backed by a 20 year warranty* from BlueScope Steel.

Leading Technology
AQUAPLATE® steel has been developed by BlueScope Steel specifically for the water tank market. It has a food-grade polymer skin bonded to its inner surface which helps ensure your water tastes clean and fresh, free from any tainting from the tank itself. It’s for this reason that a tank made from AQUAPLATE® steel stands out from the rest.

Setting the Standard

A tank made from AQUAPLATE® steel is the only steel tank to comply with the tough Australian Standard on the use of plastic materials for food contact use (AS2070 part2).

In effect, it means AQUAPLATE® steel is deemed completely safe for the storage of drinking water for human consumption.

AQUAPLATE® steel is available in a galvanised steel finish, or a selected range of pre-painted colours. Regardless of how saline or corrosive your water might be, you can be assured AQUAPLATE® steel will stand up to the test. You can feel safe in the knowledge that BlueScope Steel is standing behind you. In fact, BlueScope Steel warrants* the performance of tanks made from AQUAPLATE® steel for 20 years (against corrosion to perforation), subject to approved installation and sound construction. Some points to note about installation and care.

• Tanks made from AQUAPLATE® steel must have a top, preferably with a manhole cover in place at all times. That’s because the polymer coating is not resistant to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. A cover also prevents the growth of algae and excludes vermin.
• Install filters on all outlets to keep out mosquitos. Kerosene or similar chemicals should not be added to discourage the growth of mosquito larvae, as they can cause the polymer coating to degenerate.
• Wherever possible, install your tank in a cool, shady place, away from trees and falling leaves that could otherwise clog the strainer or contaminate the water.
• Tank overflow should not be allowed to run down the side of the tank. It should piped to ground level and directed away from
  the tank base.
• 

  Tanks should not be placed directly on the ground. The support must be flat and capable of safely supporting the tank when full (tank weight plus one kg per litre). For example a 1000 gallon (4500 litres) weighs approx. 4.5 tonne. Concrete is the preferred base, other materials can be used. Please contact us for advise.

• Do not connect copper pipes to the tank. If you have a copper outlet, allow at least two metres of plastic pipe between the tank and the copper pipe. Copper piping must not beused for recirculating water to the tank. Avoid entering the tank or using tools to clean it. A correctly-fitted strainer will reduce the need to clean, as will approved first flush units and various types of filters. If entry is essential, wear rubber soled shoes and ensure your ladder has rubber footings. Should the polymer be damaged, it should be immediately repaired using an appropriate sealer.
• 

  AQUAPLATE® steel has been specifically developed for the storage of drinking water. Other substances should not be stored
  without prior reference to the manufacturer- BlueScope Steel.

Every 1mm of rain that falls on every square metre of roof equals 1 litre that
could be collected in your tank.

So the formula is:

1m x 1m x 1mm = 1 litre

Example:
160m² of roof x 5mm rain = 800 litres

250m² of roof x 15mm rain = 3750 litres
